A game plan for tech talent
Digital | Technology
August 31, 2023 – Keeping up with the market for tech talent has become increasingly important for companies, according to a recent report by McKinsey Global Institute partner Michael Chui, senior partner Lareina Yee, and colleagues. For example, job postings in fields related to 15 key technology trends grew 15 percent between 2021 and 2022, even though global job postings overall decreased by 13 percent. Generative AI was the fastest-growing tech field, at 44 percent. Recent layoffs in the tech sector may present a silver lining for other industries that have struggled to win the attention of attractive candidates and retain senior tech talent.

Visual form
Small-multiples job-postings chart. It breaks tech-trend hiring into many mini panels rather than one combined line.
Layout / body structure
The chart is arranged as a grid of separate tech-trend panels, each comparing 2021 with 2022 on a shared scale. Reader moves panel by panel across applied AI, next-generation software development, cloud and edge computing, trust architectures, future mobility, electrification, climate tech, advanced connectivity, immersive reality, industrializing machine learning, Web3, future of bioengineering, future of space technologies, generative AI, and quantum technologies.
What is being compared
It compares job postings across multiple tech-trend fields between 2021 and 2022, with special attention to which domains are growing fastest.
Measurement system
The y-axis is thousands of job postings, and each panel shows the two-year comparison for one technology field. The chart is about hiring demand, not compensation or workforce size.
Visible structure inside the graphic
The repeated small-multiples layout gives each trend its own mini chart on the same visual grammar. That makes it easy to compare both absolute posting levels and relative growth without crowding everything into one panel.
Main takeaway from the visual
Demand for tech talent broadened across many trends, with generative AI rising fastest inside the whole field. The grid format makes that clear by letting the reader see a wide set of increases at once and then spot the standout panel.
Key standout values or extremes
The supporting text flags 400,000 additional postings across tech-trend fields between 2021 and 2022 and identifies generative AI as the fastest-growing field at 44 percent. The visual also shows that the surge was not isolated to one topic, because many panels move upward together.
