China's AI potential
China | Artificial Intelligence
September 6, 2022 – Over the next decade, the artificial intelligence market in China will provide a $600 billion opportunity, according to McKinsey analysis. The majority of that opportunity—64 percent—is expected to come from automotive, transportation, and logistics. Manufacturing, meanwhile, will drive another 19 percent; enterprise software will contribute 13 percent; and healthcare and life sciences should account for 4 percent of the opportunity.

Treemap.
Layout / body structure
A single treemap fills the visual area. The chart starts with the overall total at the top, then divides the space into four sector bands, and then into the domain-level rectangles inside each band.
What is being compared
The chart compares estimated economic value potential from artificial intelligence in China across four major sectors and the specific domains inside those sectors.
Measurement system
The values are shown in billions of dollars. Rectangle size represents the size of the opportunity, and the sector totals are printed beside the bands.
Visible structure inside the graphic
The full chart totals 600 billion dollars. The largest band is automotive, transportation, and logistics at 380, containing autonomous driving at 335, personalized updates at 30, and fleet asset management at 15. Manufacturing totals 115, made up of process-design R&D at 100 and product R&D at 15. Enterprise software totals 80, with data and middleware at 45 and software-as-a-service applications at 35. Healthcare and life sciences totals 25, split into drug discovery at 10, clinical-trial optimization at 10, and clinical-decision support at 5.
Main takeaway from the visual
The treemap shows that China’s AI opportunity is highly concentrated. Automotive, transportation, and logistics dominates the chart, and within that sector autonomous driving is by far the largest single block.
Key standout values or extremes
The largest single value in the chart is autonomous driving at 335 billion dollars. The next biggest domain is process-design R&D at 100. At the sector level, automotive, transportation, and logistics totals 380, far above manufacturing at 115, enterprise software at 80, and healthcare and life sciences at 25.
