Follow the tech leaders
Technology
April 15, 2022 – Companies with tech leaders involved in business strategy tend to have higher performing IT organizations. According to our survey of technology and business leaders, 73 percent of respondents at top-performing companies say that their most senior tech leaders are highly involved in shaping company-wide strategy. Only 31 percent of other respondents say the same—a gap that’s more than twice as big as it was in 2020.

Visual form
Paired segmented-column comparison.
Layout / body structure
The chart is split into two year panels, one for 2020 and one for 2021, and each year panel contains a pair of stacked vertical columns. Read left to right within each year from top-quartile performers to respondents at all other companies, then compare the two year panels side by side.
What is being compared
The chart compares how involved the most senior technology leaders are in enterprise-wide business strategy at top-quartile IT performers versus all other companies. It also compares how that distribution shifts from 2020 to 2021.
Measurement system
Each column is split into response shares in percent across four involvement levels: very, moderately, slightly, and not at all. The stacked heights sum to 100 percent, so the reader is comparing composition by response level rather than absolute counts.
Visible structure inside the graphic
Each pair uses bright blue stacks for top performers and dark gray stacks for all other companies, with the category labels aligned to the segments on the left and connecting guide lines on the right. The most visually important segment is the top ‘very’ block in each column, because it dominates the top-performer columns and remains much smaller in the comparison columns.
Main takeaway from the visual
Technology leaders are much more deeply involved in enterprise-wide strategy at top-performing IT organizations, and that gap widens in 2021. The biggest visual difference is the much taller ‘very’ segment for top performers, especially in the 2021 panel, where that block clearly towers over the corresponding segment for all other companies.
Key standout values or extremes
In 2020, 57 percent of top-quartile performers say the most senior technology leaders are very involved, versus 38 percent at all other companies. In 2021 the gap widens further to 73 percent versus 31 percent; on the opposite end, the 2021 top-performer column drops to 0 percent not at all, while all other companies still show 8 percent not at all and 17 percent only slightly involved.
