SURAH 69 — Al-Ḥāqqah — الحاقة — “The Inevitable Reality”

• Revelation Order: 78
• Event Anchor: Late Meccan confrontation through eschatological certainty (c. 619–622 CE)

Explanation:
Al-Ḥāqqah asserts the absolute certainty of the Day of Judgment and dismantles Meccan skepticism by recalling destroyed civilizations like Thamūd and ‘Ād. This intense eschatological warning aligns with the late Meccan phase when Quraysh remained defiantly unconvinced despite years of preaching. The surah’s dramatic imagery and rhetorical force aimed to break through hardened resistance. It emphasizes that denial does not weaken reality, mirroring a moment in the mission when disbelief had reached entrenched levels, requiring powerful reminders of the consequences awaiting rejecters.

The Inevitable Reality –1Meccan5324
What is the Inevitable Reality?2Meccan5325
And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality?3Meccan5326
Thamud and ‘Aad denied the Striking Calamity.4Meccan5327
So as for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast].5Meccan5328
And as for ‘Aad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind6Meccan5329
Which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.7Meccan5330
Then do you see of them any remains?8Meccan5331
And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities with sin.9Meccan5332
And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity].10Meccan5333
Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried your ancestors in the sailing ship11Meccan5334
That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.12Meccan5335
Then when the Horn is blown with one blast13Meccan5336
And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow –14Meccan5337
Then on that Day, the Resurrection will occur,15Meccan5338
And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm.16Meccan5339
And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].17Meccan5340
That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.18Meccan5341
So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, “Here, read my record!19Meccan5342
Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account.”20Meccan5343
So he will be in a pleasant life –21Meccan5344
In an elevated garden,22Meccan5345
Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near.23Meccan5346
[They will be told], “Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth in the days past.”24Meccan5347
But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, “Oh, I wish I had not been given my record25Meccan5348
And had not known what is my account.26Meccan5349
I wish my death had been the decisive one.27Meccan5350
My wealth has not availed me.28Meccan5351
Gone from me is my authority.”29Meccan5352
[Allah will say], “Seize him and shackle him.30Meccan5353
Then into Hellfire drive him.31Meccan5354
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him.”32Meccan5355
Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allah, the Most Great,33Meccan5356
Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.34Meccan5357
So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend35Meccan5358
Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;36Meccan5359
None will eat it except the sinners.37Meccan5360
So I swear by what you see38Meccan5361
And what you do not see39Meccan5362
[That] indeed, the Qur’an is the word of a noble Messenger.40Meccan5363
And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe.41Meccan5364
Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember.42Meccan5365
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.43Meccan5366
And if Muhammad had made up about Us some [false] sayings,44Meccan5367
We would have seized him by the right hand;45Meccan5368
Then We would have cut from him the aorta.46Meccan5369
And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him.47Meccan5370
And indeed, the Qur’an is a reminder for the righteous.48Meccan5371
And indeed, We know that among you are deniers.49Meccan5372
And indeed, it will be [a cause of] regret upon the disbelievers.50Meccan5373
And indeed, it is the truth of certainty.51Meccan5374
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.52Meccan5375
