SURAH 75 — Al-Qiyāmah — القيامة — “The Resurrection”
• Revelation Order: 31
• Event Anchor: Early–mid Meccan confrontation over resurrection (c. 613–617 CE)
Explanation:
Al-Qiyāmah answers one of the central theological disputes in Mecca: denial of bodily resurrection. The surah rebukes claims that God cannot reassemble human remains and exposes the psychological resistance behind that denial. It also reassures the Prophet regarding the reception and recitation of revelation, suggesting a period when his public proclamation was intensifying. The combination of eschatological argument and spiritual guidance fits the early–mid Meccan phase, when disbelief in the afterlife was a major barrier to the acceptance of Islam.
| Verse | Verse # | Meccan v Medinan | General Index |
|---|---|---|---|
| I swear by the Day of Resurrection | 1 | Meccan | 5552 |
| And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection]. | 2 | Meccan | 5553 |
| Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? | 3 | Meccan | 5554 |
| Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips. | 4 | Meccan | 5555 |
| But man desires to continue in sin. | 5 | Meccan | 5556 |
| He asks, “When is the Day of Resurrection?” | 6 | Meccan | 5557 |
| So when vision is dazzled | 7 | Meccan | 5558 |
| And the moon darkens | 8 | Meccan | 5559 |
| And the sun and the moon are joined, | 9 | Meccan | 5560 |
| Man will say on that Day, “Where is the [place of] escape?” | 10 | Meccan | 5561 |
| No! There is no refuge. | 11 | Meccan | 5562 |
| To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence. | 12 | Meccan | 5563 |
| Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back. | 13 | Meccan | 5564 |
| Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness, | 14 | Meccan | 5565 |
| Even if he presents his excuses. | 15 | Meccan | 5566 |
| Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur’an. | 16 | Meccan | 5567 |
| Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation. | 17 | Meccan | 5568 |
| So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation. | 18 | Meccan | 5569 |
| Then upon Us is its clarification [to you]. | 19 | Meccan | 5570 |
| No! But you love the immediate | 20 | Meccan | 5571 |
| And leave the Hereafter. | 21 | Meccan | 5572 |
| [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, | 22 | Meccan | 5573 |
| Looking at their Lord. | 23 | Meccan | 5574 |
| And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted, | 24 | Meccan | 5575 |
| Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking. | 25 | Meccan | 5576 |
| No! When the soul has reached the collar bones | 26 | Meccan | 5577 |
| And it is said, “Who will cure [him]?” | 27 | Meccan | 5578 |
| And the dying one is certain that it is the [time of] separation | 28 | Meccan | 5579 |
| And the leg is wound about the leg, | 29 | Meccan | 5580 |
| To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession. | 30 | Meccan | 5581 |
| And the disbeliever had not believed, nor had he prayed. | 31 | Meccan | 5582 |
| But [instead], he denied and turned away. | 32 | Meccan | 5583 |
| And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride]. | 33 | Meccan | 5584 |
| Woe to you, and woe! | 34 | Meccan | 5585 |
| Then woe to you, and woe! | 35 | Meccan | 5586 |
| Does man think that he will be left neglected? | 36 | Meccan | 5587 |
| Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted? | 37 | Meccan | 5588 |
| Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allah] created [his form] and proportioned [him] | 38 | Meccan | 5589 |
| And made of him two mates, the male and the female. | 39 | Meccan | 5590 |
| Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead? | 40 | Meccan | 5591 |
