SURAH 77 — Al-Mursalāt — المرسلات — “Those Sent Forth”

• Revelation Order: 33
• Event Anchor: Early-to-mid Meccan warning phase (c. 613–617 CE)

Explanation:
Al-Mursalāt uses a sequence of oaths referring to messenger-angels delivering warnings, fitting an era when Muhammad’s message focused on the inevitability of judgment and the folly of rejecting revelation. The repeated refrain “Woe that Day to the deniers” aligns with rising Meccan hostility and the Qur’an’s response through escalating rhetorical force. The surah’s structure—short, emphatic bursts—matches the oral public recitations of the early–mid Meccan period, when verses were crafted to arrest attention in marketplaces and gatherings.

And We placed it in a firm lodging21Meccan5643
For a known extent.22Meccan5644
And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.23Meccan5645

Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs41Meccan5663
And fruits from whatever they desire,42Meccan5664
[Being told], “Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do.”43Meccan5665
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.44Meccan5666
