A.A. concept · Steps Eight and Nine
Amends
Amends are the practical work of taking responsibility for harm and repairing what can be repaired, with honesty, timing, courage, and care for the people involved.
From regret to responsible action
Step Eight creates willingness to make amends. Step Nine moves that willingness into action wherever possible. The purpose is not to win an argument or force forgiveness; it is to face the harm and do what can honestly be done to repair it.
Repair must not create new harm
A.A.’s Step Nine includes judgment, timing, courage, and prudence. Direct contact is not automatically right; the welfare of the other person and of anyone else affected must be part of the decision.
The work of making amends
Remember the harm
Use the Step Eight list to identify people and situations instead of letting guilt remain vague.
Choose the right action
Consider timing, motive, safety, and whether direct contact would injure anyone.
Live the repair
Follow words with changed behavior so the same harm is not repeatedly recreated.
Amends can take more than one form
Direct repair
Where appropriate, speak honestly to the person harmed and take responsibility without turning the conversation into a defense.
Restitution
When something tangible can be restored or repaid, responsible action may include doing the practical work required.
Changed conduct
When direct contact is unsafe, impossible, or would cause injury, living differently can be the responsible form of repair.
Not an apology contest
An amend is not measured by whether the other person accepts it, replies warmly, or restores the relationship. The person making the amend is responsible for the honesty and conduct, not for controlling another person’s response.
Not an excuse to reopen wounds
Good intentions do not erase the safety clause. Timing, discretion, guidance, and the possibility of further injury matter; sometimes the most responsible action is indirect or deferred.
