- ATP
- GTP
- other nucleoside triphosphates
- pyrophosphate
Operational definition
Conserved energetic state.
The capacity of an activated phosphorylated compound to drive another reaction through transfer or hydrolysis of a phosphoryl group.
ATP is the predominant general intermediary, but phosphoryl-transfer potential also exists in:
- GTP;
- phosphoenolpyruvate;
- acyl phosphates;
- phosphagens;
- pyrophosphate.
The category describes reaction potential, not a quantity of “energy stored in a bond” in isolation.
