Operational definition
Matter-assimilation process.
The uptake and incorporation of sulfur into cellular organic compounds such as cysteine, methionine, cofactors, and sulfur-containing prosthetic groups.
When sulfate is the source, it generally must be reduced before incorporation. Assimilatory sulfur reduction must be distinguished from dissimilatory sulfur or sulfate reduction used primarily for energy metabolism.
