Collective discernment

An informed group conscience is built, not counted.

A group conscience seeks the collective view of informed members through facts, discussion, listening, A.A. principles, and—when appropriate—a vote.

“The group conscience is the collective conscience of the group membership.”

A way to structure the conversation

This is an orientation, not a required script. Listening and new information can pause or reopen the discussion.
  1. 01

    Frame the question

State the decision clearly and identify who is affected.

  2. 02

    Gather the facts

Make relevant information available before deciding.

  3. 03

    Discuss and listen

Allow members to speak, ask questions, and consider A.A. principles.

  4. 04

    Hear minority views

Make room for dissent. New information may justify reconsideration.

  5. 05

    State the direction

When the group is ready, clarify the outcome, responsibility, timing, and how the work will be reported back.

Before the decision

Before calling it informed

  • Did members receive the relevant facts?
  • Could majority and minority views both be heard?
  • Was enough time allowed for a sensitive issue?
  • Is the direction clear enough to carry out and report back?

Responsibility returns

Direction is complete only when it comes back to the group
