A rugged, cataract-ridden stretch from Aswan into northern Sudan. The river here is broken by granite outcrops and narrow passages, creating natural fortresses and choke points. These features limit large-scale agriculture but give the corridor major strategic value. Whoever controls these bottlenecks controls contact between Egypt and the African interior. The geography produces fortified societies, hybrid cultures, and constant political friction with the north.
