Conserved redox state.
The capacity of a reduced electron carrier to donate electrons to a reduction reaction.
Principal carriers include:
- NADH;
- NADPH;
- reduced ferredoxin;
- flavodoxin;
- FAD-linked systems;
- reduced coenzyme F₄₂₀.
Reducing power and ATP are not interchangeable currencies. ATP primarily supplies coupling through phosphoryl transfer, whereas reducing carriers supply electrons.
