Operational definition
Metabolic state.
A coordinated, reversible reduction of metabolic rate and biological activity below the normal active baseline in order to reduce resource demand or survive adverse conditions.
It may occur in:
- torpor;
- hibernation;
- estivation;
- diapause;
- seed dormancy;
- spores;
- microbial persistence;
- cryptobiosis.
Suppression is not necessarily complete metabolic cessation.
