SURAH 111 — Al-Masad — المسد — “The Palm Fiber / The Flame”

• Revelation Order: 6
• Event Anchor: Early public opposition led by Abū Lahab (c. 613–615 CE)

Explanation:
Al-Masad directly references Abū Lahab, one of Muhammad’s most hostile uncles and earliest public opponents. The surah aligns with the moment when Muhammad began openly preaching in Mecca and tribal leaders responded with mockery, threats, and coordinated resistance. Abū Lahab famously repudiated the Prophet at the Mount of Ṣafā gathering, cursing him publicly. This surah’s condemnation of both Abū Lahab and his wife reflects the crystallization of early opposition and marks one of the first explicit confrontations between the prophetic message and Meccan aristocracy.
