SURAH 87 — Al-A‘lā — الأعلى — “The Most High”

• Revelation Order: 8
• Event Anchor: Early Meccan rhythmic proclamation period (c. 610–614 CE)

Explanation:
Al-A‘lā reflects a phase when the Qur’an’s message was being publicly recited in concise, rhythmic passages designed to penetrate the hearts of listeners accustomed to oral poetry. The surah emphasizes creation, divine decree, and the purification of the soul—foundational themes of early Islam. Its comforting tone toward the Prophet (“We will make you recite, and you will not forget”) fits a moment of early mission when reassurance and clarity were essential. This surah aligns with the stage in Mecca where the message was spreading through public recitation and early gatherings, challenging societal norms with simple but piercing monotheistic affirmations.
