SURAH 89 — Al-Fajr — الفجر — “The Dawn”

• Revelation Order: 10
• Event Anchor: Early Meccan warnings using historical precedents (c. 610–614 CE)

Explanation:
Al-Fajr invokes destroyed civilizations—‘Ād, Thamūd, and Pharaoh—to warn Meccans that arrogance and injustice lead to downfall. This style reflects the early Meccan effort to awaken a heedless society by drawing on known legends of past peoples who rejected divine guidance. The surah criticizes the moral failures associated with wealth, cruelty, and neglect of orphans and the poor, fitting the phase when Muhammad challenged Mecca’s economic elites. Its eschatological crescendo mirrors the urgency of early revelation aimed at moral shock and transformation.

And [by] ten nights2Meccan5995
And [by] the even [number] and the odd3Meccan5996
And [by] the night when it passes,4Meccan5997
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?5Meccan5998
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Aad –6Meccan5999
[With] Iram – who had lofty pillars,7Meccan6000
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?8Meccan6001
And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?9Meccan6002
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? –10Meccan6003
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands11Meccan6004
And increased therein the corruption.12Meccan6005
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.13Meccan6006
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.14Meccan6007
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, “My Lord has honored me.”15Meccan6008
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me.”16Meccan6009
No! But you do not honor the orphan17Meccan6010
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.18Meccan6011
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,19Meccan6012
And you love wealth with immense love.20Meccan6013
No! When the earth has been leveled – pounded and crushed –21Meccan6014
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,22Meccan6015
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell – that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?23Meccan6016
He will say, “Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life.”24Meccan6017
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,25Meccan6018
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].26Meccan6019
[To the righteous it will be said], “O reassured soul,27Meccan6020
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],28Meccan6021
And enter among My [righteous] servants29Meccan6022
And enter My Paradise.”30Meccan6023
