After a severe disruption, micromobility is set for a strong comeback
COVID-19 | Travel & Transportation
August 17, 2020 – The shared and private micromobility industry (bicycles, e-scooters, and mopeds) suffered pretty badly during lockdowns, with ridership declining 60 to 70 percent. But changes in consumer sentiment and policy over the next few years could drive a 5 to 10 percent increase over prepandemic levels.

Visual form
Area Chart: timeline impact curve for micromobility passenger-kilometers from the 2020 shock through 2030.
Layout / body structure
The timeline reads left to right from the short-term lockdown drop to the medium-term rebound and the long-term 2030 outlook. The filled curve falls below the zero baseline first, then rises above it, with callouts attached to each period.
What is being compared
It compares the short-term COVID-19 disruption, the medium-term recovery period, and the long-term passenger-kilometer outlook for shared and private micromobility.
Measurement system
The vertical measure is percent change in passenger-kilometers traveled. Negative values show ridership loss versus the precrisis path, while positive values show expected gain above that baseline.
Visible structure inside the graphic
The largest filled area is the early 2020 drop, which plunges far below zero. The curve then crosses back into positive territory and narrows into a smaller long-term upside band.
Main takeaway from the visual
The chart shows a severe near-term ridership collapse followed by a recovery strong enough to put micromobility above its precrisis trajectory by the end of the decade.
Key standout values or extremes
The short-term decline is labeled minus 60 to minus 70 percent. The long-term 2030 impact is labeled plus 5 to plus 10 percent.
Controls / sequence, when applicable
This is a static area chart; there are no in-chart controls to operate.
Companion media, when applicable
