Visual form

Gap projection chart with supply line.

Layout / body structure

The chart runs from 2022 to 2030 on a left-to-right time axis, with the projected supply line drawn inside a larger forecast frame that is scaled in millions.

What is being compared

It compares projected top-tier AI talent availability in China against the much larger talent demand implied by 2030.

Measurement system

The vertical axis is measured in millions, rising to about 8, and the horizontal axis marks years from 2022 through 2030.

Visible structure inside the graphic

A single labeled supply line slopes upward through the decade, while the headline and the open space above the line emphasize the size of the shortfall between available talent and required talent.

Main takeaway from the visual

The graphic is built to make the shortage visible through the gap itself: supply rises over time, but it remains far below the level implied by the 2030 need.

Key standout values or extremes

The page headline states that the 2030 top-tier talent gap could exceed four million, and the source text frames the underlying demand jump as roughly one million to six million workers.

China’s AI talent gap

Artificial Intelligence | China

June 12, 2023 – China’s need for workers skilled in AI is expected to grow sixfold by 2030 (from one million to six million). However, local and overseas universities, as well as existing top-tier talent, could provide only one-third of the necessary talent, leaving a shortage of about four million. Senior partner Alex Sawaya and colleague found that Chinese companies could use two key levers to address the shortfall: upskilling existing workers and diversifying talent sources.

By 2030, China could see a top-tier tech-talent gap of more than four million.
