Let's talk about AI
Technology | Growth
December 15, 2022 – What technologies will be key for advancing new businesses? AI tops the list for many executives, according to the latest McKinsey Global Survey on new-business building. Senior partners Ari Libarikian and Ralf Dreischmeier and colleagues found that more than half of respondents anticipate a need to incorporate artificial intelligence into their new businesses to deliver on their value propositions. Thirty-five percent say the same about the Internet of Things.

Visual form
Industry comparison bar chart.
Layout / body structure
The chart is laid out as an industry-by-industry comparison, with each sector shown against the same question about required technologies for new businesses. Reader scans across industries to see how consistently AI appears near the top.
What is being compared
It compares survey responses across industries on whether AI is a required technology for new businesses in the years ahead.
Measurement system
The values are survey shares, so the reader is tracking the percentage of respondents in each industry who identify AI as necessary to the value proposition of future businesses.
Visible structure inside the graphic
The internal structure is built from one industry group after another, each with its own bar or marker for the share of respondents selecting AI. The repeated sector framing makes the cross-industry consensus easy to read.
Main takeaway from the visual
The chart shows that AI is not a fringe bet reserved for a few digital sectors. In most industries the majority view points in the same direction, which makes AI look like a baseline requirement rather than a specialized add-on.
Key standout values or extremes
The strongest numeric signal is that in most industries a majority of respondents say AI will be required for new businesses in the years ahead. The bars cluster above the halfway mark, which is the main visual story.
