Visual form

Scatter Plot: multi-series dot plot of mask-type use across public settings.

Layout / body structure

Public destinations run across the horizontal axis, and each destination has three dots for cloth masks, surgical masks, and N95 respirators. The mask illustrations and legend sit on the left to identify the three series.

What is being compared

It compares personal use of different face-mask types across grocery stores, retail stores, food services, office buildings, outdoor private settings, public transit, hotels, outdoor public settings, private vehicles, and gyms.

Measurement system

The vertical scale is percent of respondents using each mask type in each public setting. Dot height encodes the share for each mask type and location.

Visible structure inside the graphic

Cloth-mask dots are highest almost everywhere, surgical-mask dots sit lower, and N95 respirator dots are lowest. Grocery and retail stores show the highest overall mask-use levels.

Main takeaway from the visual

The chart shows that mask use was common across many public settings, especially enclosed consumer settings. Cloth masks were the dominant face covering across destinations.

Key standout values or extremes

Cloth-mask use is near 60 percent in grocery stores and in the high 50s in retail stores. N95 use remains much lower, generally near the low teens across most destinations.

Controls / sequence, when applicable

This is a static multi-series scatter plot; there are no in-chart controls to operate.

Companion media, when applicable

There is no separate companion audio or video; the mask-use dot plot is the full visual on this page.
