Taking green cred to the bank
Sustainability | Banking | Financial services
May 12, 2023 – There’s an opportunity for retail banks to bolster their green credentials, according to a recent survey by senior partners Marie-Claude Nadeau and Dan Stephens and colleagues. For example, on average, less than 50 percent of consumers view their financial institutions as sustainable brands. Even fewer say their banks are affecting climate change for the better.

Visual form
Horizontal range-dot comparison chart.
Layout / body structure
A single chart stacks four survey statements vertically, with each statement read left to right across a 0 to 100 scale and a blue average dot sitting between quartile whiskers.
What is being compared
It compares how consumers rate their banks on four environmental perception statements: being a sustainable brand, making a difference for the environment, affecting climate change for the better, and having a clear environmental message.
Measurement system
The measure is percent of respondents who agree or strongly agree, and the graphic uses one average dot plus a bottom-quartile to top-quartile range for each statement rather than a pair of bars.
Visible structure inside the graphic
Each row uses the same anatomy: a gray full-length baseline, a thin horizontal whisker showing the interquartile spread, and one bright blue dot marking the average, so the reader compares both the center point and the spread statement by statement.
Main takeaway from the visual
The average perceptions stay clustered in the low-to-mid range instead of near the far right of the scale, which makes the chart’s point clear that banks are not yet strongly differentiated by their green credentials.
Key standout values or extremes
The strongest average sits on “Is a sustainable brand” at a little above 40, while the other three statements cluster around the mid-20s to high-20s, with “Has a clear message about the environment” appearing lowest.
