Visual form

Global Cooperation Barometer chart.

Layout / body structure

The chart is organized around five pillars of cooperation. It lets the reader move across pillars to see which areas are rising, flattening, or declining.

What is being compared

It compares global cooperation trends across trade and capital flows, climate and natural capital, innovation and technology, health and wellness, and peace and security.

Measurement system

The chart uses indexed or directional barometer-style measures rather than one shared unit. Each pillar is interpreted by trend direction over time.

Visible structure inside the graphic

Trade and capital flows and climate and natural capital are presented as rising areas, while innovation and technology, health and wellness, and peace and security are shown as leveling off or declining.

Main takeaway from the visual

Global cooperation has not moved in one direction. Some forms of cooperation have strengthened, while other critical pillars have stalled or weakened.

Key standout values or extremes

The main split is two improving pillars versus three flat or declining pillars, showing that the overall cooperation picture is mixed rather than uniformly positive.

Controls / sequence, when applicable

The ties that bind

Global Trade | Technology | Climate change

March 29, 2024 – Global cooperation is key to better lives and livelihoods, but in some areas it appears to have stalled after trending positively for much of the past decade. In collaboration with the World Economic Forum, global managing partner Bob Sternfels and colleagues developed a Global Cooperation Barometer that looks at five pillars of cooperation. Trade and capital flows and climate and natural capital are on the rise, while innovation and technology, health and wellness, and peace and security have either leveled off or are on the decline.
