SURAH 74 — Al-Muddaththir — المدثر — “The Cloaked One”

Explanation:
Al-Muddaththir is anchored to the moment Muhammad transitioned from private prophetic experience to public preaching. After the first revelation, there was a pause, and then this surah commanded him to “arise and warn.” It marks the formal beginning of the mission’s outward phase: warning society, rejecting idols, and enduring hostility. The surah’s admonitions against impurity, falsehood, and arrogance correspond to the earliest efforts to announce Islam to Meccan audiences and confront entrenched moral corruption.

And your clothing purify	4	Meccan	5499
And uncleanliness avoid	5	Meccan	5500
And do not confer favor to acquire more	6	Meccan	5501
But for your Lord be patient.	7	Meccan	5502
And when the trumpet is blown,	8	Meccan	5503
That Day will be a difficult day	9	Meccan	5504
For the disbelievers – not easy.	10	Meccan	5505
Leave Me with the one I created alone	11	Meccan	5506
And to whom I granted extensive wealth	12	Meccan	5507
And children present [with him]	13	Meccan	5508
And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].	14	Meccan	5509
Then he desires that I should add more.	15	Meccan	5510
No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.	16	Meccan	5511
I will cover him with arduous torment.	17	Meccan	5512
Indeed, he thought and deliberated.	18	Meccan	5513
So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.	19	Meccan	5514

Then he considered [again];	21	Meccan	5516
Then he frowned and scowled;	22	Meccan	5517
Then he turned back and was arrogant	23	Meccan	5518
And said, “This is not but magic imitated [from others].	24	Meccan	5519
This is not but the word of a human being.”	25	Meccan	5520
I will drive him into Saqar.	26	Meccan	5521
And what can make you know what is Saqar?	27	Meccan	5522
It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],	28	Meccan	5523
Blackening the skins.	29	Meccan	5524
Over it are nineteen [angels].	30	Meccan	5525
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve – that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, “What does Allah intend by this as an example?” Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.	31	Meccan	5526
No! By the moon	32	Meccan	5527
And [by] the night when it departs	33	Meccan	5528
And [by] the morning when it brightens,	34	Meccan	5529
Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]	35	Meccan	5530
As a warning to humanity –	36	Meccan	5531
To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.	37	Meccan	5532
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained	38	Meccan	5533
Except the companions of the right,	39	Meccan	5534
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other	40	Meccan	5535
About the criminals,	41	Meccan	5536
[And asking them], “What put you into Saqar?”	42	Meccan	5537
They will say, “We were not of those who prayed,	43	Meccan	5538
Nor did we used to feed the poor.	44	Meccan	5539
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],	45	Meccan	5540
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense	46	Meccan	5541
Until there came to us the certainty.”	47	Meccan	5542
So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.	48	Meccan	5543
Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away	49	Meccan	5544
As if they were alarmed donkeys	50	Meccan	5545
Fleeing from a lion?	51	Meccan	5546
Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.	52	Meccan	5547
No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.	53	Meccan	5548
No! Indeed, the Qur’an is a reminder	54	Meccan	5549
Then whoever wills will remember it.	55	Meccan	5550
And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.	56	Meccan	5551
