Sponsorship has no universal schedule or script. It develops through continuing contact between equals, with room to ask questions, discuss expectations, and change the relationship.

A useful rhythm

Recurring practices—not rigid stages

The relationship can revisit these practices in any order.

Talk openly

Questions, concerns, and practical problems can be discussed between meetings.

Share experience

The sponsor explains what A.A. and sobriety have meant personally rather than issuing universal rules.

Relate the program to life

Meetings, literature, Steps, Traditions, and sober experience are connected with everyday situations.

Widen connections

The sponsored member can meet other members and groups instead of depending on one person alone.

Revisit expectations

Availability, fit, and boundaries can be discussed; either person may decide to make a change.

A wider recovery network

Sponsorship is one part of the A.A. program

If a sponsor is unavailable, the official guide points to other members, meetings, local A.A. service, and A.A. literature.

Recovery support is not limited to one person.
