Personal recovery practice orientation workbook
The Steps are practice—not a test
Working the Steps means reading, discussing, and trying to apply A.A.’s Twelve Steps in personal recovery and daily life. Pace, understanding, and spiritual language vary from person to person.
This is an orientation. It describes ways people approach the work; it does not replace the official Step text.
Four verbs keep the work concrete
Begin with the official wording and return to it as understanding develops.
Ask questions and hear how other members understand and apply the Steps.
Choose a principle to practice in an actual situation rather than only thinking about it.
Notice what happened, continue what helped, and bring new questions back to the work.
Three lenses on the work
These letters are not Step numbers and do not prescribe a sequence.
Begin
Recognize the problem and choose a different course
Become open to help beyond self-reliance and begin moving in another direction.
Examine
Take inventory, admit what is found, and address harm carefully
Look honestly at conduct, share what is discovered, become willing to change, and make repair with care.
Continue
Practice, reflect, serve, and carry the message
Use continuing inventory, prayer or meditation, service, and daily application to keep the work active.
Bring one Step into focus
What words or ideas am I looking at?
What do I want to ask or hear experience about?
What principle could I practice in a real situation?
What happened, and what will I continue or revisit?
Meetings support the work; personal practice applies it
In a meeting
Hear experience and study together
Members may attend Step- or literature-focused formats and listen to how others understand the program.
In personal practice
Study and attempt to apply the Steps in life
A member works at an individual pace and may discuss experience and questions with a sponsor.
