A.A. concept · Steps Four and Ten
Inventory
An inventory is a disciplined way to look honestly at conduct, motives, harms, and responsibilities—so that insight can become a more useful way of living.
A searching and fearless review
Step Four begins a thorough examination of the patterns and liabilities that have shaped a life. “Fearless” does not mean emotionless; it means refusing to let fear keep the truth hidden.
A continuing practice
Step Ten carries the same honest attention into daily life. When something is wrong, the practice is to recognize it and promptly admit it rather than let denial become tomorrow’s problem.
What the review brings into view
Conduct
What did I do, say, avoid, or repeat?
Motives
What fear, demand, pride, or self-interest was directing me?
Impact
Who was affected, and what happened to the relationship or responsibility?
Next action
What must I admit, repair, change, or discuss with another person?
Inventory is meant to move somewhere
Look
Describe what actually happened without polishing the story or turning the review into an attack on someone else.
Own
Identify your part with enough honesty to be useful, while keeping responsibility distinct from blame for everything.
Act
Admit the wrong, make the appropriate repair, and practice a different response the next time the pattern appears.
Not a self-condemnation ledger
The purpose is not to prove that a person is bad. A.A.’s inventory is a tool for discovering what blocks sobriety, serenity, honesty, and useful relationships.
Not a one-time clearance
The word “continued” matters. Step Ten makes review part of daily living, so a mistake can be addressed while it is still small instead of accumulating into another hidden burden.
