A.A. CONCEPTS AND VOCABULARY
One day at a time
A.A.’s present-tense way of approaching sobriety: stay with the day in front of you, and let tomorrow arrive as tomorrow.
A lifetime is not the first unit of recovery
The official A.A. explanation of the 24-hour program turns an overwhelming horizon into a manageable decision. A member does not have to promise, in one moment, how every future day will go. The work begins with staying sober today.
What the phrase makes possible
Three ways the day becomes workable
Bring the decision into the present
“One day” keeps attention on the day that can actually be lived, rather than on an impossible demand to control the entire future.
Let recovery be practiced repeatedly
Each sober day is not a failure to finish; it is another day in which the decision and the program can be lived.
Keep the next step visible
The phrase gives recovery a clear scale: make today’s sober choice, then meet the next day when it becomes today.
The daily rhythm
A simple horizon, lived seriously
One day at a time is not a shortcut around recovery. It is the scale at which the continuing work can be carried out.
Recognize today
The present day is the part of the future that has arrived and can be addressed.
Choose sobriety today
The immediate decision is not postponed until a perfect day or a complete explanation.
Use the program and support
A.A. describes sobriety as a way of life strengthened by the Steps and by other alcoholics.
Begin again tomorrow
When tomorrow arrives, it becomes another present day—not a lifetime that must be solved in advance.
Keep the phrase accurate
Small horizon does not mean small commitment
“One day at a time” does not mean that sobriety is casual, temporary, or isolated. It means that a serious continuing direction is carried through the present day, where choices, relationships, and recovery practice can actually take place.
