Step Seven in the “Into Action” sequence

Humility becomes useful when willingness turns into action

On page 76 of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Seventh Step Prayer stands between two kinds of work. Steps Five and Six have brought admitted defects into the open and tested the willingness to let them go. Steps Eight and Nine will turn attention toward people who were harmed. The prayer joins those movements by asking for freedom from what obstructs usefulness—and for strength to do the work that follows.

“We have emphasized willingness as being indispensable.”

Review

The earlier work is checked before the next Step

The page opens by asking whether the work through Step Five has been thorough. Step Seven rests on inventory and admission; it does not replace them.

Readiness

The text makes room for incomplete willingness

The member is asked whether every admitted defect can be released. If something is still being held back, the response is to ask for willingness—not to claim a readiness that is not yet present.

Prayer

The request is directed toward usefulness

The prayer connects removal to usefulness. The concern is not simply relief from discomfort, but freedom from the traits that obstruct service to a Higher Power and to other people.

Strength

Strength is requested for the work ahead

The prayer closes by asking for strength to carry out a new direction. That request is immediately tested in relationships, responsibility, and amends.

Transition

The next sentence turns outward

“Now we need more action” opens the movement into Steps Eight and Nine. The harms list made during inventory becomes the starting point for willingness and repair.

Need opens the door

Repeated defeat and the admission of powerlessness begin to transform humiliation into a workable humility and a willingness to learn.

Pages 74–75

Humility becomes a desire

As pain acquires meaning and a measure of peace appears, the motive can shift from merely escaping consequences toward wanting humility itself.

Page 76

Demand gives way to request

The essay examines self-centered fear and unsatisfied demands, then points toward a different relationship with a Higher Power and with other people.
