Included scales
Immediate buffering
Stabilizes ATP, redox state, or membrane potential over very short intervals.
Short- and medium-term reserves
Support ordinary fasting, darkness, inactivity, or fluctuating resource supply.
Long-term reserves
Support prolonged scarcity, migration, reproduction, dormancy, or major developmental transitions.
Developmental reserves
Support an embryo, seed, egg, spore, or propagule before autonomous acquisition.
Structural-biomass mobilization
Uses functional tissue when dedicated reserves are insufficient or when remodeling is adaptive.
External storage
Places food or energy-bearing matter outside the body for later retrieval.
Ecosystem-scale storage
Retains organic matter in long-lived biomass, soil, peat, or sediment.
Inclusion rule
A pool belongs here when its persistence materially allows acquisition and expenditure to occur at different times.
A complete storage profile should identify:
- capacity;
- chemical form;
- mobilization rate;
- deposition cost;
- maintenance cost;
- accessibility;
- expected duration;
- risks of loss or theft.
Buffer-versus-reserve distinction
A buffer primarily stabilizes short-term fluctuations.
A reserve primarily shifts resources across longer intervals.
The distinction is relative to the organism. A reserve lasting hours may span a major fraction of a microorganism’s life but only a brief interval for a large vertebrate.
Storage-versus-sequestration distinction
Storage implies potential biological availability.
Sequestration means material remains inaccessible or unused for a long interval and need not be intentionally retrievable by the producer.
