SURAH 84 — Al-Inshiqāq — الانشقاق — “The Splitting Open”

• Revelation Order: 83
• Event Anchor: Late Meccan eschatological intensification (c. 619–622 CE)

Explanation:
Al-Inshiqāq describes the cosmic rupture of the heavens and earth on the Day of Judgment, a hallmark theme of late Meccan revelation when opposition had hardened and the Qur’an responded with increasingly vivid apocalyptic warnings. The surah emphasizes the inevitability of accountability and the separation of the righteous from the wicked, fitting the period when moral confrontation peaked. Its final verses instruct the Prophet to persist in preaching despite resistance—a direct reflection of the late Meccan climate, where denial was widespread yet the message pressed forward with increasing force.

VerseVerse #Meccan v MedinanGeneral Index
When the sky has split [open]1Meccan5885
And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]2Meccan5886
And when the earth has been extended3Meccan5887
And has cast out that within it and relinquished [it]4Meccan5888
And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] –5Meccan5889
O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it.6Meccan5890
Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand,7Meccan5891
He will be judged with an easy account8Meccan5892
And return to his people in happiness.9Meccan5893
But as for he who is given his record behind his back,10Meccan5894
He will cry out for destruction11Meccan5895
And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.12Meccan5896
Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness;13Meccan5897
Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allah].14Meccan5898
But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever of him, Seeing.15Meccan5899
So I swear by the twilight glow16Meccan5900
And [by] the night and what it envelops17Meccan5901
And [by] the moon when it becomes full18Meccan5902
[That] you will surely experience state after state.19Meccan5903
So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,20Meccan5904
And when the Qur’an is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allah]?21Meccan5905
But those who have disbelieved deny,22Meccan5906
And Allah is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.23Meccan5907
So give them tidings of a painful punishment,24Meccan5908
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.25Meccan5909
