SURAH 86 — At-Tāriq — الطارق — “The Piercing Star / The Night Visitor”

• Revelation Order: 36
• Event Anchor: Early-to-mid Meccan cosmic reflection period (c. 614–618 CE)

Explanation:
At-Tāriq directs attention to the heavens and the mysterious “piercing star,” using cosmic signs to underscore God’s control and the inevitability of resurrection. This corresponds to a period in Mecca when the Qur’an frequently invoked astronomical imagery to confront disbelief in the afterlife. The surah’s argument for divine surveillance (“every soul has a guardian over it”) fits the escalating moral confrontation of mid-Meccan revelation. Its blend of cosmic imagery and accountability reflects a stage where the Qur’an aimed to dismantle fatalistic or dismissive attitudes among Meccan skeptics.
